Summer in Lancaster County means being able to get locally grown, fresh produce all the time! We have several great farmers markets, and farmers often sell there bounty along side the road, as well. Actually, it seems that during the summer, produce stands of one kind or another can be found on almost every back road around here!
Pictured below is what I picked up yesterday at a local road side stand, (I only wish I had had my camera with me at the time, as the beautiful plow mules were standing right next to me as I paid!)
Local yellow plums! (Yes, yellow!) These are the sweetest, most juiciest things around!
Farm fresh tomatoes, summer squash, and onions. I'll cook them up with some black beans and serve them over pasta tonight.
Lancaster County corn on the cob. I could eat this for breakfast, lunch and dinner, everyday of the week! It is the taste of summer!
I love the idea of farmers selling their produce by the side of the road. Something that sadly doesn't happen where I am. Yellow plums? I've never seen yellow ones before! They look so sweet! It all looks so fresh & tasty. I want to have dinner at your place! I'll bring dessert. No, wait, I'll not have to as we can eat your delicious plums for dessert. Yay! I'll do the dishes at least :D

ReplyDeleteAbout 4 years ago my family and I travel across American. We live in California and made it all the way back east. We stopped for a couple days in Lancaster. It was so humid! There was a haze of moister in the air. We went a market inside a building in Lancaster. There was all kinds of Vegetables, breads, and Cheeses. I can't remember the name of the market though. I guess it was like a farmers market.

ReplyDeleteVictoria, we have locally grown fresh produce stands on almost every intersection where I live. That's one of the good things about living in the south! And all your produce looks just as good as ours! What perked my interest was you mentioning black beans, that sounds yummy with the tomatoes, squash & onions!

ReplyDeleteI would venture to guess that you went to Central Market, which is in the heart of Lancaster City, and a real gem. It is the oldest continually operating farmers market in America. I used to live right down the road from it, and walked there all the time!

ReplyDeleteThose plums are making my mouth water. No-one round here grows stuff like that and supermarket plums are like wood at the moment. I should go to the local market really but last time I was there they had asparagus which I almost bought then saw it was from Peru! And the ridiculous thing is, English asparagus is twice the price.

ReplyDeleteI love Lancaster County - haven't been in years, will have to visit. I love those yellow plums - I've never had them. Yes, next time get a photo of the plow mules - would love to see the countryside there!
